In the midst of a good article in a San Fransisco newspaper on the Humboldt Squid which grows to 15 to 60lbs the writer noted this little gem.
“In 13 trips on the New Sea Angler to Cordell Bank, a total of 640 people (40 per trip) have caught some 9,000 squid, that is, an average of 14 per person. The average squid has been 20 pounds, with the largest, weighing 58 pounds, caught by Pat Martin of Sacramento.
Most fishermen are going home with 150 to 200 pounds of 1-inch thick calamari steaks. ” (!!??? What?)
Tell me he was kidding, are there really so-called fishermen in the USA that are that blind to the need to conserve fish. What the hell is anyone going to do with 200 pounds of dressed fish. Is it not enough that US tuna, broadbill, and marlin fleets are strip-mining the oceans; now apparently some of their amateurs are joining in screwing the oceans. Idiotic!
