The BBC reports on world-wide attempts to get a commercial fishing method known as bottom trawling banned. It is a hugely destructive form of fishing, wreaking havoc on bottom dwelling creatures and flora.
New Zealand is mentioned in the article as one country (that still uses bottom trawling) that will look at a ban if there is significant moves in this direction made overseas. But how long can the “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours” childish nonsense go on – someone has to start the ball rolling.
There appears to be no good economic reason for continuing with this trawling method, it accounts for only a very small percentage of total fish caught, but its affect on fisheries is way out kilter.
