Anglers still fishing canals despite Didymo fears

by Bishfish on January 7, 2006

Meridian Energy says some anglers are continuing to fish on the Waitaki Hydroelectric Scheme canals (South Island, New Zealand) despite being asked to stop, for fear of spreading the invasive Didymo alga (Rock snot).

The company put up around 50 signs just before Christmas asking people to stop fishing in the hydro canals and waterways, which are popular for salmon fishing.

Meridian Energy (electrcity generator) spokesperson Gerald Raymond says the canals are the perfect environment for Didymo and if it took hold, it could pose serious problems for hydro-generation, irrigation and salmon farmers.

The company will reassess the position later this month but Mr Raymond says it is considering working with BioSecurity New Zealand staff to enforce the restriction.

My reaction: These clowns that are ignoring the signs are nothing short of self-serving idiots with no thought for the danger Didymo poses to all NZ waterways. Everybody who uses NZ’s lakes and rivers needs to work together to firstly halt the spread of this curse, and then we can work to getting rid of it.
