Imitation or Approximation the Key to Tying More Effective flies

I was at my fly-tying bench trying very hard to work off some Christmas feasting when I started to ruminate on the difference between Imitative and Approximate flies, all set off by wondering how, no matter how good an imitation the lump of fur and feather is on the shank, nothing disguises the bend and sharp bit of the hook protruding from the flies rear end.
