NZ leading didymo research

by Bishfish on May 25, 2006

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) says New Zealand is leading the world in researching the invasive alga Didymo (Rock Snot).

NIWA’s Christchurch regional manager Barry Biggs has just returned from the first international conference on Didymo in the United States. Biggs says the alga is spreading rapidly across the western US and Eastern Europe and research in those areas is lagging behind New Zealand.

He says they have failed to realise that it is a new variant that is causing the spread, and they do not have the same vigilant biosecurity infastructure as New Zealand.
