We Don’t Know How Lucky we are!

by Bishfish on August 1, 2006

From the Flyfishmagazine site comes a link to story about fishing at a US lodge, Spring Ridge Club in Pennsylvania.

Now two things are notable about this story:
First, it costs NZ$122,000 to join the club, and NZ$9,000 annual fee. On top of this are lodge fees for each visit.
Second, the article talks about ‘immense fish’ of 3 to four pounds - that is around the average size of Taupo area fish.

But before we NZers get all puffed up about this, it serves as warning that we must fight tooth and nail to stop the growing trend of landowners restricting river access to those who pay for the privilege. More specifically opening access only to high paying anglers - high paying overseas anglers too often accompanied by overseas ‘guides’ who would not last a day in the ‘real’ guiding world in this country.
