A couple of weeks ago I had a crack at the current very silly trend, especially in the more gung-ho school of fishing web sites and web magazines, of holding a fish’s head as close to the camera as possible without actually covering it in slime - and holding the tail as close to the angler’s body as possible to exaggerate the length of the fish.
Then I came across this. MidCurrent linked to a nice little story in Syracuse.com about a 9 year old catching a 9lb. Steelhead. Nice photo too.
But it was Marshall Cutchin’s (of MidCurrent) comments that really grabbed me…
“As you may know, the standard grip-and-grin fish photo doesn’t grind our beans. In fact, if we never saw another fish shoved into the camera lens, we’d manage just fine. But when an image includes a nine-year-old catching a nine-pound steelhead on a black stonefly, the rules are changed. Notice the distinct lack of branded hi-tech fishing gear… and especially the big smile.”
The lack of a carefully manicured 3 day old beard, sun-glasses, and a cap pulled down over the eyes, works for me too. I wish the gung-hoes would just grow down, and try to re-learn the boyhood thrill of catching a fish, and show it on their faces.
